Mammographic breast density can mask cancers at mammography and is an independent risk factor for breast cancer. Legislation mandates patients be notified of mammographic breast density. In mammography reports, radiologists describe an assessment of a patient’s breast density, which is a description of how much fibrous and glandular tissue is in their breasts, as compared to fatty tissue.

Recent studies show that qualitative assessment of mammographic breast density is subjective and varies widely between radiologists. We have developed a deep-learning model to reliably assess breast density. This model can be applied to assess breast density at the same level as experienced breast imagers and can be used in routine clinical practice.
